The short answer
Treat a phone update as a small supported appointment. Check that your parent can unlock the phone, verify the backup, and arrange another way to call before installation. Then finish by checking the everyday tasks they rely on. These steps reduce avoidable disruption; they cannot guarantee that every update will be trouble-free.
In this guide 10 sections
What to keep in mind
- 1Confirm the screen-lock code privately before a restart, even when face or fingerprint unlocking usually works.
- 2Verify a completed backup, connect to reliable Wi-Fi and power, and keep another phone available.
- 3Check system updates in Settings and app updates in the relevant app store.
- 4Let your parent test calls, messages, and familiar controls before you finish.
01
Agree on a time and check access first#
Ask your parent whether now is a convenient time and what they need the phone for today. Avoid starting just before travel, an appointment, or an expected call. If you are helping remotely, agree how to reconnect after the phone restarts. Have another working phone available during installation, including for an urgent call.
Have your parent confirm their screen-lock code privately. An iPhone requires its passcode after restarting, and Pixel phones require their PIN, pattern, or password before fingerprint unlocking resumes. If the code is forgotten, pause before installing; do not repeatedly guess.
Also confirm which Apple Account or Google Account belongs to them and where they keep their own sign-in information. Do not sign out to test it. Let them enter passwords and verification codes themselves, and stop screen sharing while they do. Helping with an update does not require taking ownership of their account.
02
Verify the backup before tapping Install#
Use the phone backup checklist linked above if the backup status is unclear. The relevant step here is checking a completed backup and what it covers; you are not preparing to erase the phone.
Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi, then open Settings, your parent's name, iCloud, then iCloud Backup. If using iCloud, run Back Up Now and wait for completion. Check the date and time shown beneath it. A computer backup is another option.
On Android, find Backup in Settings and review the account and Backup details. Menu names vary. Google says a backup can take up to 24 hours and not every app can back up all its data. Check important photos and chat apps separately. A switched-on backup setting alone does not prove that today's information is recoverable.
03
Prepare Wi-Fi, power, and enough space#
Connect to reliable Wi-Fi and plug into a working charger. Google recommends charging an Android device to at least 75 percent before updating. Follow any additional requirement displayed on the phone. Allow time for both downloading and installation without promising an exact finish time.
If storage is too full, pause and use the phone storage guide linked above. Agree on anything to remove. Avoid deleting photographs, chat history, or an essential app just to make the update fit. Free space inside a cloud account is different from free space on the phone.
04
Start from Settings, not a browser warning#
Open the phone's Settings app yourself or guide your parent there. This gives you a known place to check whether a system update is actually available. A web page demanding an urgent download is not the phone's Software Update screen. Apple warns that pop-ups can impersonate software-update notices to install unwanted software.
If an alert looks suspicious, leave the browser and check Settings independently. Do not install an unfamiliar updater, configuration profile, or download file to complete this session. Read the update description together, especially if it describes substantial changes to familiar controls.
05
On iPhone, follow the update offered for that device#
Go to Settings, General, then Software Update. Review the installed version and the available update. Choose the normal public release offered for that device and follow the on-screen download and installation instructions. Button wording can differ by software version.
Keep the phone connected to power. Your parent should enter the passcode when requested. If the phone proposes temporarily removing apps for space, read that prompt together before accepting; Apple says those apps are reinstalled afterward. Postpone if that would disrupt something they need immediately.
06
On Android, check the system and Google Play separately#
On many Android phones, open Settings, System, then Software updates. On Samsung Galaxy, look for Software update or System updates, then Download and install, Check for system updates, or Check for software updates. The model, software version, carrier, and country can change the wording and release timing. Follow the phone's instructions, including any requested restart.
Google Play system updates are a separate check from updating individual apps in the Play Store. Where available, open Settings, Security & privacy, System & updates, then Google Play system update. If that path differs, search Settings for that exact term or consult the manufacturer's instructions.
After installation, return to the system update screen. Some phones need more than one update to catch up. Complete additional offered updates when your parent has time, rather than assuming the first restart finished everything.
07
Update the apps your parent uses#
A completed operating-system update does not mean every downloaded app is current. On iPhone, open App Store, tap the account picture, and find the app updates list. Current versions may label it App Updates. Choose Update beside an app, or Update All.
For Google Play apps, open Play Store, the profile icon, then Manage apps & device. Under Updates available, choose See details and update the relevant apps. Galaxy Store apps may also have updates in Galaxy Store. Review unfamiliar permission requests with your parent instead of accepting them automatically.
08
Finish with a short everyday-access check#
Once installation finishes, let your parent unlock the phone and try these everyday tasks. This handover checklist is our practical editorial guidance.
- Make and receive an ordinary call with a family member; confirm the sound is comfortable. Do not place an emergency test call.
- Send and receive a message in the app they normally use.
- Open their essential apps and check familiar contacts, text size, volume, and notification visibility.
- If they use Bluetooth audio or a hearing device, check the connection during an ordinary call.
- Check the usual alarm or reminder settings and practice any control that has moved.
09
If the update stalls, preserve access before troubleshooting#
For a download error while the phone still works normally, note the exact message and check Wi-Fi, power, and storage. A slow download or progress bar alone does not prove the phone has frozen. Keep it powered and follow the manufacturer's instructions for that screen before forcing a restart.
If installation repeatedly fails, the phone will not start normally, or an essential function stops working, use the alternative phone and seek device-specific support. Do not use factory reset, Restore, or an emergency recovery option as a routine update fix; those options can erase data. Check the backup and understand the proposed recovery step before proceeding.
10
Plan for the next update and an older phone's limits#
Review automatic-update settings together. On iPhone these are under Software Update, Automatic Updates; Android options vary. Keep useful automatic protections enabled where practical, and agree who will help if a restart changes something confusing. Leave a short note of the update date and anything to revisit.
A phone showing no available update may still have reached the end of its support. Check the exact model against Apple's security-release information, Google's Pixel support information, or Samsung's security-update scope. Missing the newest major OS alone does not establish that all security support has ended.
If the manufacturer confirms that security support has ended, plan a supported replacement and transfer while the old phone still works. Do not force newer firmware onto it or assume app updates replace missing operating-system security fixes.
Plan the next support session
Keep a way to reconnect
Agree on the usual contact, an alternative channel and a nearby helper if the phone needs more attention.
