The short answer
Review subscriptions with your parent's permission, identify the billing account, and cancel only the renewals they choose. Deleting an app does not cancel its subscription. Check storage and essential-service dependencies first, then keep a private record of the result.
In this guide 9 sections
What to keep in mind
- 1Let your parent decide what to keep, cancel, or investigate, and enter their own passwords.
- 2Check who bills each subscription. An app can be installed on a phone without its subscription appearing in that phone's store account.
- 3Review storage, communication, family sharing, and safety needs before changing a plan.
- 4Complete the cancellation flow and read the resulting status. A refund is a separate request, and some payment plans still have scheduled payments.
- 5Keep the service name, decision, and displayed end date privately, without copying unrelated purchases or account details.
01
Start with your parent's choices#
A subscription review works best as a small shared task. Ask whether your parent wants help finding renewals, understanding one unfamiliar app, or canceling something they have already chosen. Agree on that scope before opening account or purchase information.
Let them hold the phone and enter their own password or verification code. If you are helping remotely, read one step at a time and ask them to describe the relevant screen. They can stop sharing before private information appears. There is no need to collect their credentials or browse an entire inbox together.
Use three decisions: keep, cancel, or check first. A familiar game, newspaper, or music service can be worth keeping because your parent enjoys it. An unfamiliar name belongs in check first until you understand it. Work on one item at a time so each decision has a clear result.
02
Identify the subscription and who bills it#
Start in the phone's subscription settings using the steps below. For each item, read the service name, billing period, displayed renewal or end date, and any plan details. Ask what the service does before judging whether it is unused.
If you need to match a charge, Apple provides purchase history at reportaproblem.apple.com. Open that address yourself and let your parent sign in. In Google Play, open the profile menu, then Payments & subscriptions and Budget & history. A past purchase entry helps identify a transaction; it does not by itself establish whether renewal is still active.
If your parent chooses to consult a bank or card statement, look only for the relevant billing company and transaction. Keep the rest private. The company taking payment determines where to resolve the subscription, which may be Apple, Google Play, the app provider, or a mobile carrier.
03
Check storage and essential services before canceling#
Put cloud storage, communication, security, and safety services in check first. Ask what would stop working, whose information is stored there, and whether another family member uses a shared plan. An app your parent rarely opens may still support something they rely on.
Apple says that when the lower allowance takes effect, iCloud stops syncing and updating stored information if usage exceeds the new capacity, and iCloud backups cannot complete. Google warns that reaching or exceeding the storage allowance after a plan ends can prevent Gmail from sending or receiving messages, stop new Drive uploads, and stop Google Photos backups.
Before canceling storage, check usage against the replacement allowance and make a separate plan to preserve needed files. Before changing a paid calling, monitoring, or safety service, confirm its dependencies with the provider and arrange any necessary replacement. Do not delete photos or disable a support service just to finish today's review.
04
On iPhone: review and cancel through Apple#
For a subscription billed by Apple, use this route with your parent. Read the selected plan carefully before confirming any change.
- Open Settings, tap your parent's name, then open Subscriptions.
- Choose the subscription they want to review.
- If they decide to stop it, tap Cancel Subscription and complete any prompts. Scroll down if necessary.
- Return to that subscription and read its status and any displayed expiration date. Apple says an absent Cancel button or a red expiration message means it is already canceled.
- For an unwanted Apple trial, Apple's general guidance is to cancel at least 24 hours before it ends. Read any warning about when access will finish.
05
On Android: review and cancel through Google Play#
Open the Google Play Store, tap the profile picture, then choose Payments & subscriptions and Subscriptions. Check which Google Account is selected before opening the plan. Menu wording can vary with software and language.
Select the subscription, choose Cancel subscription, and follow the remaining instructions. Read the final status and access date. Google says ordinary canceled subscriptions remain available for the period already paid for. If the screen offers a different arrangement, such as a payment plan, read its terms before drawing a conclusion about future payments.
Do not stop at an offer, a reason-selection screen, or the first cancellation button. Finish the flow, then reopen the subscription to check the result. If the list is empty or the expected app is missing, follow the account and provider checks below.
06
If the subscription is missing, check the account and provider#
For Apple, find the relevant receipt in your parent's own inbox and check the Apple Account it names. If it belongs to another family member, that person must cancel their subscription. For another Apple Account your parent owns, open Apple’s official cancellation guide in Source context below and use its web cancellation option. Sign in with the account shown on the receipt. Avoid signing the whole phone out just to investigate a billing mismatch.
For Google Play, the email used inside the app may differ from the Google Account that purchased it. Check the receipt. In Play's profile menu, use the arrow beside the account to select another account your parent owns. Ask the account holder for help if a family member originally subscribed.
A provider may bill directly even when its app came from an app store. Google says subscriptions purchased through alternative billing do not appear in Play's subscription center. Apple also directs customers with other-company or carrier billing to that provider. Open the provider's known app or website independently and look for account or subscription management, or use its official support.
07
Treat an unexpected receipt as something to verify#
An alarming email is not proof that a subscription exists. Apple warns that fake purchase receipts can be phishing messages. Do not use a suspicious message's cancellation link, attachment, or supplied support number. Open Settings, Google Play, or the provider's established website yourself and compare the account's records.
If you cannot match the message to a real subscription, keep the result as unverified. If an actual account record or statement shows an unexplained charge, use official billing support.
08
Understand what cancellation changes#
Deleting an iPhone or Android app does not cancel its subscription. Use the billing provider's cancellation process even if the app has already been removed. Canceling renewal also does not automatically refund a payment already made; refund requests follow separate provider rules.
Some Google Play subscriptions involve a commitment paid in installments. Google says stopping renewal leaves remaining payments in the current payment plan due. Trial access, provider terms, and country or region rules can also differ. Read the specific result shown for this plan instead of assuming all access or payments end today.
09
Save the result without collecting private account details#
Ask your parent where they want to keep the confirmation. A short private note can record the service, who bills it, the action taken, and the end date displayed. If they keep a screenshot, capture only the relevant confirmation and avoid including email addresses, payment details, or other subscriptions in anything shared.
Leave uncertain items labeled check first, with the next step written down. For an item kept temporarily, agree on a review date before its renewal. For a canceled item, check its status again if the confirmation was unclear. Finish by showing your parent what changed and what still needs their decision.
